INSTALLING AND CONFIGURING:

The game officially does not support Microsoft Windows 95/98/Me/NT/2000 operating systems. However it is possible to install game on them. You can encounter different problems with the game, therefore install it at your own risk.

1. Minimal system requirements

   Microsoft Windows XP/Vista/7
   1 GHz CPU
   512 Mb RAM
200 Mb of uncompressed hard drive space (not including space for screenshots and savegame files)
   100% Windows 2000/XP/Vista-compatible keyboard
3D-accelerator - 100% DirectX-compatible video card with 64 Mb onboard video memory and latest drivers.

2. First run

When running for the first time, game suggests to select graphics settings optimal to your system. Please pay attention to this choice. It is better to select low settings and then increase them in the game menu, rather than select higher and descrease them at low rendering performance. There is also a chance that game won't even start, and won't display a configuration window later. To deal with this, run "Configure" command file in the "system" directory, and graphics settings window appears.

Low graphics quality is recommended for systems based on integrated graphics and old video cards lacking shader support and low rendering performance, for example, RivaTNT, GeForce 256, GeForce2 MX, GeForce4 MX, Radeon 7200, Radeon 7500, and also for video cards supporting Matrox shader implementation (Matrox Parhelia). This mode is also recommended for low-cost notebooks, and when running game on Wine.

Medium graphics quality is recommended for old video cards supporting shaders 1. (except Matrox Parhelia), for example, GeForce3, GeForce4, Radeon 8500, Radeon 9200, and also for GeForce FX series.

High graphics quality is recommended for old video cards supporting shaders 2.0 or higher (except GeForce FX), for example, GeForce6, GeForce7, Radeon X800, Radeon X1300/X1600, and for low-cost cut versions of modern video cards.

Very high graphics quality is recommended for modern video cards supporing GLSL shaders, for example, GeForce 8800/9600/9800, GeForce GT 240, GeForce GTX 275, Radeon HD 3000/4000 series or better.

Maximum graphics quality is recommended for modern systems with outstanding performance, including fast multicore processor and top video card model. There is no texture compression in this mode, so that video card must have enough video memory. If you are not sure of capabilities of your system, please select 'High graphics quality' and tweak it later in game preferences.

The text above is just a recommendation. In particular, you may select a high graphics quality for GeForce FX series video card and play in this mode, if there is an acceptable frame rate.

The game can be run on netbooks like Asus EEE PC. It is recommended to select a low graphics quality when running for the first time. Later the quality can be increased up to pixel shader usage (which is however not recommended due to low shader performance on integrated Intel video cards). If the netbook runs at lowered CPU speed, it is recommended to increase in to the maximum (for example, using "eeectl" utility for EEE PC 701).

PROBLEM SOLVING:

To achieve the best performance, please make sure that you have the latest drivers installed for video and sound card. Unusally driver update helps to solve a vast amount of problems.

1. Video issues

Please note that integrated video cards without hardware acceleration are not supported. If you experience problems on such a video card even at low graphics quality, you should upgrade the computer.
If the game does not start in a fullscreen mode, make sure that the screen resolution is supported by both the video card and the monitor. Open "base/config.cfg" and find the lines:

r_displayWidth "xxx"
r_displayHeight "xxx"

You will see the current values of display width and height instead of "xxx". Set them to 640 and 480 respectively, which is supported by most video cards and monitors, and change them later in the graphics menu, if necessary.

r_displayWidth "640"
r_displayHeight "480"

You may decline using a fullscreen mode and run the game in a window. To do that, find the parameter in the file mentioned above:

r_fullscreen "1"

And replace 1 with 0.

If the game is not stable, try to decrease graphics quality to the minimum, and increase it until figure out what feature causes instability.

Your video card drivers may be obsolete and may not support some GLSL language features. In that case it is recommended to disable GLSL support in the "Advanced graphics settings" menu.

If the game crashes, a crash recovery window appears at the next lauch, suggesting either normal or safe mode. If you consider the crash being occasional and not connected to video subsystem, please select Normal mode. If game regularly crashes after alteration of graphics settings, please select Safe mode and restore the settings which were stable for the game.

2. Sound issues

If you experience problems with sound, try to switch to software mode using the sound options menu. Some artifacts may also occur when sound compression is turned on. In that case please turn sound compression off (it is off by default).

Please don't forget to mention what game are you talking about, and attach the log file to the letter (see below).

3. Other issues

If you want to use Alt+Tab to minimize the game window, enter "Options" -> "Game" menu, and set the option "Allow Alt+Tab" to "Yes". Then please exit the game and launch it again. If the game does not save settings on exit, automatic update malfunctions or there are some problems with hosting a server, make sure that there is a write access to the game directory. Such a problem may occur in Windows, when the game directory has a "Read only" attribute.

Please report all the problems found. We will do our best to solve them. To give us maximum of the information, you should do the following:
Run game with "-log" parameter. The file "Volatile3D II.log" appears in the "system" directory. If you don't have admin privileges, the file can be found in "ChainStudios/Volatile3D_II/system" subdirectory of your home directory (it is usually "My Documents" directory on Windows). Try to reproduce the error. However even if you cannot reproduce it, attach this file to the report letter.
Try to describe the error as thoroughly as possible, so we'll be able to reproduce it in exactly the same conditions.
Send the error description and the log file to the address: support@hlfx.ru, or post a thread on our board http://hlfx.ru/forum.
