NETWORK PLAY:
-------------

Go into the "Multiplayer" menu to host or join a network game.
Sanity supports both LAN and Internet play with the standard TCP/IP
protocol.

IMPORTANT NOTE:

If you are not connected to the Internet, you MUST choose
"Private TCP/IP Game" when hosting a multiplayer game. Otherwise
you will experience long delays as your computer tries to access the
 Internet.

Internet Play:

Make sure that you have an active TCP/IP Internet connection. Some
firewalls may block access to Sanity multiplayer games--if you can
connect to web pages but not to Sanity's multiplayer service, check with
 your service provider.

You can choose your multiplayer "Update Rate" by clicking the Multiplayer
button on the Sanity launcher or by selecting Multiplayer from the game's
Main Menu. It is very important that you choose the update rate that best
matches your Internet connection speed. Dialup modem users should choose
the "28.8 kbps" or "56 kbps" settings, depending on your modem speed.
ISDN and low-bandwidth DSL users will be best served with the "ISDN"
setting. High-bandwidth DSL, cable and users on a direct T1 or faster
Internet connection should experience best performance with the "T1 or
 faster" setting.

*Advanced tip: you can set a "custom" Update Rate setting by editing the
"UpdateRate" value in the autoexec.cfg file found in the game's "Lithtech"
folder. For reference, "28.8 kbps" uses updaterate 3, "T1 or faster"
uses updaterate 20. Higher values require more bandwidth. You can also
change the Update Rate during game play by toggling down the game console
with the ~ key and entering "updaterate x" where X is the number of your
desired setting. Only advanced users should attempt these modifications
as they can potentially corrupt your installation of the game.

You may come across players or servers on the Internet that have new
Talents. See the web site at www.sanitygame.com for more information on
 finding and using these Talents.

Local Area Network (LAN) Play

LAN play is identical to Internet play in most respects. However, if you
wish to host on a LAN that does not have an active Internet connection
you must select the "Private TCP/IP game" radio button in the server setup
interface. Join the game by using the "Join Specific TCP/IP Address"
option on the Multiplayer menu--in most cases you can just leave the field
blank without having to enter the IP address of the host and Sanity will
 automatically find the game.

Dedicated Server

You can run a dedicated server on the Internet, or on your local LAN.
Ideally, the hosting system will meet the minimum system spec for processor
speed and RAM: P2 300 w/ 64MB. Players will experience smoother gameplay on
your server if it has more of both of these things. A high-bandwidth Internet
connection (ISDN or faster) is also highly desirable.

Run the dedicated server either by clicking the Stand-Alone server icon in
your start menu, or by double-clicking the sanityserv.exe in your
Sanity\lithtech folder. You will go through the normal multiplayer setup
windows. When you get to the last window and hit the Finish button there
will be a pause for loading and then the dedicated server window will appear.
This window has several useful controls:

 Server time display
The upper left section of the server interface shows how long the server
has been running, how long the current map has been running and how soon
it will switch to the next map, if you specified a time limit.

 Map list and switching functions
The maps you chose to run are listed in order in the upper right hand
corner, listed in order they will be run from top to bottom. The currently
hosted map has a black disc next to it. To switch to the next map in the
list without having to wait for the specified time or frag limit to be met,
click the Next Level button. To switch to any other map in the list, click
the map name and then click the Select Level button.

 Client list and boot function
The list of currently connected players (clients) appears in the lower left
corner. The player's score appears to the right of their name. To force a
client to leave the server immediately, click on their name and then click
   the "Boot" button below.

Console display window and command line interface
A scrolling display of the server's internal commands and status appears in
the lower right corner. Chat messages from players will also appear here. To
send players messages from the command line interface at the bottom, precede
the message with "say" and enclose the message in quotes. For instance if you
   entered

   say "hello everyone!"

all clients would see the message "hello everyone!" from "Host". Advanced users
can enter Lithtech console commands in this command line. To clear the display
   entirely, click the Clear button.

To shut the server down click the X button in the upper right corner of the
window. You will be prompted for confirmation.

Custom Maps

You may find custom multiplayer maps that did not ship with Sanity. To play with
these levels, which will have a ".dat" extension on the filename, you must place
them in a "sanity\worlds\multi" folder in your Sanity game directory. So if, for
instance, you have Sanity installed to the default directory
   C:\Program Files\Fox\Sanity
you will need to place the .dat files in
   C:\Program Files\Fox\Sanity\sanity\worlds\multi
Once the maps are placed correctly you will be able to host and join games with
them as you would with the standard retail maps.

* SPECIAL NOTE ABOUT HOSTING A MULTIPLAYER GAME OF SANITY:
Please note, when you host a Multiplayer server (Stand-alone or otherwise) and
players join your server with "new Talents" that your server does not know about,
all clients on your server will experience some "minor lag" while the "new
Talents" are being processed by your server. Once your server has processed the
"new Talents," nobody will experience this lag again until the server is shut down
or another client joins with more "new Talents" that your server doesn't have.
Because of this, it is highly recommended that server operaters obtain and acquire
the latest Talents. If you don't have all the latest Talents but want to prevent
the lag from new Talents, checking "Use Talent Restrictions" and "Don't allow
unknown Talents" boxes in the server setup will prevent players from bringing in
Talents you do not have.

COMPATIBILITY NOTES:
--------------------

Sanity is designed to function with Windows 95/98/2000 compatible
graphics cards and sound cards. The drivers for these various devices
are provided by Windows itself, or the respective manufacturers, and
may occasionally contain bugs or otherwise cause incompatibilities
beyond our control.

If you experience any problems, it is always recommended that you obtain
up-to-date drivers, which will often remedy the problem. Almost every
vendor makes their drivers available on their web site. If you are unsure
of a web site URL for a particular hardware vendor, you can try accessing
one of the popular Windows software update sites such as:

http://www.windrivers.com

OPERATING SYSTEMS:

Non-English versions of Windows:
Users with certain non-U.S. versions of Windows will have to remap their
controls before playing Sanity. You will get a dialogue box explaining
this when you run the game for the first time. Go to the Options menu,
select Controls, and configure the controls to the desired keyboard and
  mouse functions.

Windows 2000:
A bug in Microsoft's DirectInput may cause mouse button input to
"stick" when multiple buttons are pressed, so the character may
continue running even after user releases the run button. Microsoft
has announced they will address this bug in DirectX 8. See their
official DirectX site www.microsoft.com/directx for more information.

Windows 95:
The mouse wheel does not scroll through Talents in Windows 95.

GRAPHICS:

- Sanity detects multiple graphics cards and the resolution settings they are
capable of displaying. Although the user can select the highest resolution
setting possible, the game may not be able to run due to memory limitations
on the graphics card. To fix this, simply select the next resolution down
until you find one which will work.

- If you have a version of DirectX later than 7.0 installed on your PC,
ensure that the drivers are certified by the graphics card manufacturer
as compatible with the installed version of DirectX.

- Users of graphics cards with G400 chipsets may experience erratic display
of the game's fog effect although this does not prevent playing the game.
Future releases of drivers may resolve this issue. Fog also does not render
  on a TNT2 under Windows 2000 with nVidia's 5.22 reference drivers. Check
the appropriate web sites listed below for updates.

- If you experience any graphical problems, please ensure that you have the
latest available drivers for your 3D graphics card. These can be found at
the card manufacturer's web site. The most common sites are:

    ATI	(Rage) http://www.atitech.com
    Matrox (G200, G400) http://www.matrox.com
    Nvidia (Riva, GeForce) http://www.nvidia.com
    S3 (Savage) http://www.s3.com
    3Dfx (Voodoo) http://www.3dfx.com
    Creative Labs http://www.creative.com
    Diamond Multimedia (Viper)	http://www.diamondmm.com
    STB http://www.stb.com/products
    Guillemot http://www.guillemot.com

- If you find your graphics running slowly, select a lower video
resolution and/or detail setting. This can be done in the Graphics
options screen, to get there from the Main Menu select Options and
  then Graphics.

- Sanity takes place at night. Some areas are quite dark - if you are having
trouble seeing things generally, you may find a Gamma Correction slider
included in your graphics card's display software. Please refer to the
graphics card manual for further instructions.

- Users with 3dfx video cards may find that Sanity's fog effect is too dark.
You can disable fog with a setting in the Display Options menu.

MOUSE:

- In the Mouse options screen accessed by selecting Options from the Main
Menu, you can enable the hardware mouse cursor for faster mouse performance
on some systems. Please note, not all video cards support hardware cursors.

KEYBOARD:

- Users with foreign (non-U.S.) keyboards may experience difficulty using and
configuring keyboard commands in Sanity. This is due to the way in which
DirectInput reads keyboard input. Localized versions of Sanity will enable
non-U.S. keyboards to work correctly for specific languages.

ADVISORIES:
-----------

- When pressing ALT+TAB, CTRL+ESC and/or the Windows Key on keyboards, Sanity
will minimize or switch tasks. Problems may occur when minimizing games in
mid-level so this is not recommended. If you absolutely must task-switch
during gameplay we advise that you first go into the main menu screen.

TROUBLESHOOTING:
----------------

MEMORY TIPS:

- In the System Control Panel, let Windows manage the Virtual Memory
settings, or choose the recommended settings.

- Close any other applications that may be running, including anti-virus
software, screen savers, and other startup programs. The more free RAM.
  the better.

- Closing other running applications will help prevent Windows from
accessing the hard drive Virtual Memory swap file, and avoid possible
conflicts from other programs which can affect the speed of Sanity.

- Even if you close all running applications, there may be a number of other
tasks running in the background. Some of these are displayed as icons in
the System Tray on the Windows Taskbar, and others are not immediately
  obvious.

- If, after trying the above suggestions you are still experiencing
performance problems, you can experiment with closing these tasks.
However, it is possible that closing some of them could cause your
computer to crash, and require restarting.

You can usually close most System Tray tasks by right clicking or left
clicking on their Tray icon, and then selecting Close, Exit, Quit or
  Suspend (depending upon the task).

After this, to see what 'hidden' tasks are still running, from the
Windows desktop, carefully press the CTRL, ALT and DEL keys together
ONCE. This will display a list of active tasks. You can free up system
resources by closing these one at a time by clicking on a task and then
selecting the 'End Task' button. On most systems, you will be able to
close almost all tasks except 'Explorer' (which you should leave running).

BACKGROUND APPLICATIONS:

- We recommend that you shut down any other applications that may be running
before you start Sanity. Be aware that some background applications,
especially schedulers, appointment books and e-mail programs can produce
system notifications that may interfere with the gameplay. System
notifications may cause the game to minimize itself, and the Windows
  desktop to be displayed.

CD-ROM:

- Sanity constantly accesses the CD-ROM drive during play. The faster your
CD-ROM drive, the better performance may be. You can often increase
performance by increasing the CD cache size. However, increasing the
cache size more than 1 or 2Mb may actually slow performance, so be careful.

In the Windows 95/98 System Control Panel - Performance tab, select the File
System Properties button, and then the CD-ROM tab. Set the CD-ROM
supplemental cache size anywhere between the medium and large
  recommendations.

- To reduce CD-ROM access time, choose the "complete" installation option
when installing Sanity. This will reduce the amount of time your computer
has to spend reading from the CD-ROM though it will require more free hard
  disk space to install.

- If your system has errors reading from the CD-ROM drive, please perform
  the following checks:

	1) Make sure the disc surface is clean.

	2) Examine the surface of the disc for any visible scratches.

	3) Check the documentation that came with your CD-ROM drive or
contact the company that supplied the drive in order to determine
if your CD-ROM drive is functioning properly.
