Who can you play?

In Friday Night 3D Darts you get to play a number of players of differing skills. At first you may take on Trixy while you get used to the game. Be kind! Trixy finds she can reach 19 more easily than 20 (at the bottom of the board), so prefers to play for 3x19 rather than 3x20! Don't be too careless though! She can still win!

When you get better, try Grandma. She may not be strongest player around, but she will still keep you on your toes. Further down the line, there is Flash Harry. He does not shy from difficult out shots! He goes for the fastest out shot, even if risky. Since his skill does not match his ambition, you should get you past him. Further up the ranking is Stewart, who is your toughest home player and will test your concentration!

And then..?.. When you go on to the club and tournament you will meet many more and stronger players. Of course they will throw more accurately and the better players will know the perfect out shots. You darts arithmetic may not be your hottest skill, but you can ask the AI for a great hint at any time during your game (bottom left hand button).

Game Rules

3D Darts offers three game types: The Standard:

1. Darts (X01)

and the fun games:

2. Around The Clock
3. Cricket

Around The Clock

Around The Clock is a fast moving game that enables you to improve the accuracy of your dart throw. This game can be played either as a two player match or in a single player practice mode.

The Objective

The game objective is to hit every number on the board IN ORDER with your darts.

The Scoreboard

The automatic scoreboard will keep you up-to-date with information about your previous throw and what your next aim should be.

The Game Play

You commence the game by aiming at the number 1 first. When you have aimed at and hit this number, you then move onto the next number in ascending sequence (in this case, number 2), and so on until all three darts are thrown including the outer and inner bull.

Cricket

Unlike other darts games where accuracy of throw is key to winning the game, Cricket is a game where strategy plays a vital role.

In Cricket, a weaker player may beat their stronger opponent using a better strategy.

The Objective

The objective of Cricket is to "close up" your numbers faster than your opponent, in addition to obtaining equal or more points.

To close a number, you must hit it three times.

Numbers from 20 down through 15 and bulls-eye can be closed.

The Scoreboard

As a dart lands in any of the 'closing' numbers, this hit is counted as one of the three hits required to close that specific number.

When three of a number is hit/scored in ANY combination, that number is 'closed'.

Double and Triple Scores:

The thin outer ring counts as two of that number and is called a Double. The thin middle ring counts as three of that number and is called a Triple.

The player who closes all his numbers (including bullseye) in addition to having equal or more points to that of their opponent wins.

The Game Play

Play alternates between the players as each person throws three darts at any of the closing numbers to try and close that number and score points.

If you close a number that has not been closed by your opponent, then any darts thrown by yourself that land on that number are counted towards your points.

For example, if your opponent has one 19 and you have two on 19 and you throw a triple, the triple counts as three darts, one of which is used to close your 19 number and adding 38 (=2x19) to your score. Any subsequent darts you throw on the 19 will be added to your score until your opponent also closes the 19.

A player is victorious if they close all their numbers (including the bullseye), and has equal or more points to their opponent.

The combination of closing and being equal or ahead in points of your opponent must prevail. A player cannot win by merely closing all his numbers.

If in the event that you closed all your numbers (including bullseye), but still have less points than that of your opponent, the game must continue until you accumulate equal or more points or your opponent finishes.

Strategies

The most commonly used strategy would be to close the highest numbers first in descending order.

The reason being that if points were totalled at any point in the game, the player with the higher number closed would have the advantage.

A strategy by which a weaker player could beat a stronger opponent would be for the weaker player to simply stay on top of the stronger opponent's points by scoring an appropriate number early and maintaining that edge. The stronger player is then put in a difficult position of having to throw more difficult extra bullseyes to end the game, thus giving the weaker player the advantage, and perhaps the game.

Darts (X01)

XO1 is a classic Darts game that combines accuracy of throw with strategy skills, and therefore is a firm favourite amongst darts players the world over.

The Objective

The game play starts with a score of 101, 201, 301 etc ... 1001. The usual starting score is 501 but may be selected by you, unless playing in an 'Invitation Match' where this and other configurable parameters are preset.

The game objective is to get to EXACTLY zero by throwing rounds of three darts, and subtracting the sum of those darts from that of your current score.

The player who first reaches zero exactly via subtraction of points is the winner.

The Scoreboard

The number where the dart lands is the score. The thin outer ring counts as two of that number and is called a Double. The thin middle ring counts as three of that number and is called a Triple. Numbers landing on the two large sections outside of the bull, score exactly the number indicated. The outer bull counts as 25 and the inner bull is 50.

At the end of each round of three throws per player, the total points will be automatically deducted from the player’s remaining score and displayed on the scoreboard.

Double In/Out Options:

Games may be played as 'double-in' 'double out' or 'straight in' 'straight out'.

Double In: If selected you must throw a double to start the game.

Double Out: If selected you must throw a double to finish the game. Thus if you have 2 remaining on your score you must throw a double 1. If you throw a dart that leaves you in an impossible situation, ie you have a score of 2 and you throw a 1, your are 'bust', finish your turn and the throw is ignored. Your score will remain at 2.

Bust/No Bust Option

If the 'Bust' rule is in force, then if you throw a dart that would cause a 'Bust', then your whole hand is ignored and the score reset to the score at the start of your throw. If not selected, only the dart that caused the bust is ignored.

The Game Play

Once you have started your scoring by achieving your Straight-in/Double-in, then you have to try to achieve the highest points possible to enable your score to be reduced to zero at a faster rate than that of your opponent.

Play alternates between the players until scores get low and the exit and game winning requirements have to be considered.

The first player to reach exactly zero points, while taking the exit conditions into consideration (i.e. achieving the zero score with either a single for Single-out, or a double for a Double-out) wins the game.

It is possible to 'bust' when trying to achieve an exact score of zero. You 'bust' if either the total points on throwing your darts, totals below zero, or, if you are unable to achieve exactly zero with the your remaining darts.

If you bust, all darts thrown in that hand do not count towards your score your turn is over.

In a Double-out game, you can bust if although you achieve zero points, that the last throw in achieving that was not a double.

The only way to 'bust' in a straight out game is to end up with less than zero as your total score.

Strategy

Strategies are of greater importance to beginners and intermediate players; as they are the means by which a weaker player can win over stronger opponents who have greater accuracy of throw.

One strategy would be to throw your strongest number. You should, as a beginner, avoid as many more difficult higher scoring numbers as this would lead you into complications further on in the game should you miss your target.

Another strategy is for beginners to aim to reach a score of 32 points for their out (i.e. this would be a double 16). The reason being that should you miss the double 16 and hit single 16, you have 16 points left, which leaves you requiring a double 8. If the same situation happens with the 8, you will be left requiring a double 4 and so on.

The principle behind this strategy is that you are keeping your aim to be within the required double throws required for a double out, thus increasing your chances of reducing to exactly zero, while also maintaining the double out requirement.

Throwing a Dart

Click the board to start a game.

If you have not already selected a character, you will be asked to do so now.

When the mouse is moved over the board, a dart will automatically be attached to the cursor.

Hover the mouse over a segment you wish to target, and click the left mouse button down. This selects the part of the board you are aiming at and starts the throw. You can then pull the mouse back to draw the dart back, and then move the mouse forward rapidly to throw it. With the default game option settings the dart will automatically release. If you want to have more control you can turn off the auto-release option so that the dart is held until you release the mouse button.

You will now have thrown the dart. The point you hit will be determined by how hard you threw it (how fast the mouse was moving) and by the sideways motion you make with the mouse.

If you do not give the dart enough forward motion, the dart will not be released, and you can try again.

With auto-release disabled the dart is thrown in an arc simulating the movement of the human arm holding a dart. If you release the dart early, it will loop upwards. If released late it may tend to drop down. Used in combination with throw velocity, this is a very realistic approximation to the arm action when throwing a real dart.

Dart accuracy: There is a very small gap between the dart surface and the scoring detection zone due to the wire. When a dart lands very near the edge of a zone and has an angle to the board, it may be scored in a neighbouring zone rather than the zone it appears to be in. This is becausethe wire moves it to one side. This is an extremely rare occurrence, and is applied equally to all competitors in a match. Alternatively, if a dart hits the wire it may bounce out and hit the floor.

Game Rooms

Global Star Software 'Friday Night 3D Darts' is played in three rooms called Home, Club and Tournament.

When you play matches you will be competing against Computer players, referred to in the game as 'your opponent'.

Your opponent's skill level increases in each room. It is weakest in the Home Room, medium in the Club Room, and strongest in the Tournament Room.

1. Home Room
2. Club Room
3. Tournament Room

Home Room

As a novice you must start playing darts in the Home Room, which is the room you enter on the initial loading of the game.

In the Home Room your computer opponent is at its weakest level.

Due to this, the novice player although relatively inexperienced, is allowed to accumulate skill points by winning some matches.

The Home Room is the only entry point to the Club and Tournament Rooms.

When you play a game, you can select a 'Novice' setting. This restricts the amount of sideways movement the mouse makes when throwing a dart. However this also reduces the amount of skill you earn. This is only available in the Home room.

Next section: Home Matches

Matches

Darts matches played in the Home Room enable you to acquire enough skill points to gain access to matches in the Club and Tournament rooms, via invitations on the Home Room Pinboard. See Skill

Only skill points gained via playing Darts in Home Room contribute towards invitation qualifications.

You obtain entry to the Club Room when you have increased your skill to 30%.

You can obtain direct entry to the Tournament Room from the Home Room, by achieving the high skill level of 58%.

Trophies

There are no trophies to be won in the Home Room, however the trophies won elsewhere in 'Invitation Darts Matches' will appear here when won. See Trophies

Special Flights

'180' Special Flights are awarded in the Home, Club and Tournament Rooms, on achieving 3 treble 20s in one hand. See Special Flights

Club Room

In the Club Room you face stronger computer opponents than the home.

Access to the Club Room (via Club Invitations on the Home Room Pinboard) will be granted when you achieve a skill rating of 30% in the Home Room Dart matches. See Skill

Next topic: Club Matches

Club Matches

On entering the Club Room you can continue to increase your skill points to gain, invitations to play in the Club Room Invitation Dart matches. See Skill

There are two Club Room Invitation Dart Matches.

Trophies

This requires you to reach a skill level of 36% for an invite to the Club Charity Shield, and 44% for the Club Champions Match trophies. See Trophies

As you win these matches, trophies will be awarded, and these can be viewed in the Cabinet in the Home Room.

Special Flights

In addition to the '180' flights, you can be awarded with Silver flights that are specific to the Club Room only. See Special Flights

Tournament Room

In the Tournament Room you will meet the strongest computer opponents.

Only the most skilful players who have achieved the high skill rating of 58% will be invited to compete in the Tournament Room. See Skill

Next section: Tournament Matches

Tournament Matches

After entering the Tournament Room and gaining enough skill points, you will be invited to play in the Tournament Room Invitation Dart Matches.

There are three Tournament Room Invitation Matches.

Trophies

The three Tournament Room Invitation Matches are:

1. Tournament Charity Shield: (59% skill required)

2. Tournament Mini Series Award: (66% skill required)

And the ultimate Global Star Software 'Friday Night 3D Darts' game cup:

3. Tournament Champions Trophy (72% skill required).

See Trophies

As you win these matches, trophies will be awarded, and these can be viewed in the Cabinet located in the Home Room. See Cabinet

Special Flights

In addition to the '180' flights, you can be awarded with Gold flights that are specific to the Tournament Room only. See Special Flights

Skill

Skill points are the scoring system in Global Star Software 'Friday Night 3D Darts'.

A new player (who is always created in the home room), starts with 20% skill. The player must reach 30% skill before being invited to the club. This typically takes 20 games of any type, and your progress can be viewed by pressing the game button on the status bar.

You can't cheat by reducing the force of gravity. This scales down your skill bonus. Thus with gravity set to zero (when you can't miss), no bonus is given !

Gaining

As you play the game you accumulate skill points, which reflect your proficiency in throwing the darts. You can earn these in any of the games provided.

Skill is acquired through:

1. Accuracy of throwing dart

The greater the accuracy of your aim, the greater the skill points awarded. If for example a double one is required, then the more accurately and quickly you target and achieve this, a higher bonus will be added to your skill rating.

2. Winning a match

Bonus skill points are awarded if you win a match game.

3. Special Flights usage

Using special flights in games, (if you have acquired them) gives you a higher skill bonus ratings that enables quicker game progress. See Special Flights

Rewards

As your skill increases you are also awarded with special (180, Silver, Gold) flights. See Special Flights

Easter Eggs, which are special settings presented to the player on acquiring certain skill levels or under certain other conditions, are present in the game. See Easter Eggs

Losing

If you keep missing the board or your dart bounces out (i.e. lack of accuracy), you can lose skill.

Viewing

You can view your skill rating by clicking the Game button on the menu bar at the bottom of the screen.

Status Bar

The Status Bar gives you information on items in the room as you hover the mouse over them and messages about the game play such as the target segment you have chosen and the segment actually hit.

The Status Bar has three buttons: An In-game status dialog on the left marked Game and at the right hand end a View> and Throw Monitor buttons (only appears while a game is being played).

The Game button allows you to view the game progress, skill levels and manage the game. It can also be opened when not playing a match to examine your skill level.

The View button allows you to see your dart on the board from a different angle, as the darts can be difficult to see from the throw position.

The Throw Monitor button allows you to monitor the throwing power and angle of release of the dart as well as how you wish to throw the dart.

Status Bar Game Button

This allows you to view the game progress, skill levels and manage the game. It can also be opened when not playing a match to examine your skill level.

Skill Level: There are two bars representing the skill of yourself and your opponent. The bars have a range from 0 to 100 points representing the amount of skill players have acquired during game play.

Hint: Click on the Hint button in the Game menu during game play and you will be provided with a hint on the optimum number to aim for in the next throw.

Next Leg: A match can consist of a number of legs (or games). You can choose any odd number to represent the number of legs (or games) you wish to play per match. Typically a Charity match is the best of 3 legs, while a normal game consists of just 1 leg.

Game Options: This takes you to further options where you can manage the game in detail. Game Options

View

The View or Heads-up-display gives to a closer look at the dart board.

This is always given for the opponent, as the board is too far away to allow you to see where the darts land.

For the home player, this is optional and appears in the top right hand corner of the screen when the 'View' button is pressed on the status bar. If you press the 'View' button again, (when available in your turn), it will disappear.

Status Bar Throw Monitor

This allows you to monitor the throwing power and angle of release of the dart as well as how you wish to throw the dart.

Power: How hard you throw the dart. This is useful when using Keyboard Throw

Angle: The release angle of the dart. This is useful when using Keyboard Throw

Auto throw: For novice users. When you pick up the dart by clicking on the board to select a segment, rather than keeping the left mouse button pressed down, you can release it. If auto throw is selected then when you swish it forward and the mouse has enough speed, the dart will be automatically thrown when it reaches the auto throw release point.

Keyboard throw: For novice or users with restricted mouse ability, the dart can be thrown using keyboard input. Open the keyboard throw dialog, which is the UP arrow at the right hand end of the status bar. Now click and select a target to aim for on the dart board by left clicking the mouse on it. Your selection will be confirmed on the status line.

You can use the SPACEBAR to choose the power of your throw, while the UP and DOWN ARROW keys control the pull back position to throw from. When you are happy with the settings, press ENTER to throw the dart.

Novice:When checked, the side to side movement of the dart is removed, however less skill is awarded when using this.
