1. SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
----------------------------------------------------------------

To play Zen Puzzle Garden you will need:

- MacOS X or Windows 95 (or later).
- 133MHz processor or faster.

If you have any trouble getting Zen Puzzle Garden to run, please
visit our support web page:

http://www.lexaloffle.com/help.htm

----------------------------------------------------------------
2. MENUS
----------------------------------------------------------------

To navigate the menus, you can either click on the buttons using
the mouse, or you can use the cursor keys to select a button and
then press enter. You can exit any screen by pressing escape.

The main menu has 6 buttons:

PLAY Start a new game.
GARDEN DESIGNER Enter the designer.
INSTRUCTIONS Display quick instructions.
SOUND Turns sound on and off.
ZEN ONLINE A link to the online player's guide.
EXIT Quit Zen Puzzle Garden.

GARDEN SELECTION SCREEN

Once you select PLAY, you will be taken to the garden selection
screen. From here you can choose a garden to play by clicking on
it. To view a miniature version of the garden, move the cursor
over it without clicking.

When a puzzle garden is solved, it will turn pink. If you hold
down the SHIFT key when you click on a solved garden, you can
view the most recent solution to the puzzle.

The puzzles must be completed in order, but you can skip up to 4
puzzles. So if you have completed puzzles 1-20, you can try
solving any of 21-25. You can see which puzzles are playable
because they are a slightly brighter colour.

It is possible to record the progress of up to five different
players. To switch between players, press the PLAYER button.

If you would like to reset the record of solved puzzles for a
particular player, hold down SHIFT and DELETE. Use with care!

When a game is in progress, the puzzle selection screen also has
a CONTINUE button which allows you to resume the game.

----------------------------------------------------------------
3. HOW TO PLAY
----------------------------------------------------------------

The object of Zen Puzzle Garden is to rake all of the sand in
each garden. Use the cursor keys or the mouse to move the monk
around. When you step onto the sand, the monk will rake in a
straight line until he either steps off the sand or bumps into
something.

The monk can not walk over raked sand, so you have to be careful
not to rake yourself into a corner. If the monk gets trapped
and has nowhere to move, he turns to sand and the puzzle
restarts automatically. If you make a mistake, you can press 'U'
to undo the last move you made, or 'R' to restart the puzzle.

Zen Puzzle Garden is a hard game. Don't worry if you get stuck
on a garden for a long time! Try experimenting with different
raking patterns, and think of new ways to approach the puzzle.

KEYS

Cursor Keys Move the monk
ESC Exit to the menu screen
R Restart the puzzle
U Undo the last move
F Toggle fast mode
S Toggle sound

MOUSE CONTROL

To move the monk around using the mouse, simply click on the
square that you would like to move to. If you are not standing
on the sand, you can click anywhere on the ground, and the monk
will walk around the edge of the garden to get there. You can
also use the right mouse button to undo.

ORNAMENTS

Stone ornaments are like rocks, but they can be pushed around.
To push an ornament, just walk into it. You can only push the
ornament into an empty square of sand.

LEAVES

Leaves must be picked up in order of colour: yellow, orange and
red. So, you can only pick up the orange leaves once all of the
yellow ones have been collected, and you can only pick up the
red leaves once all of the orange leaves have been collected. If
you try to pick up a leaf in the wrong order, you will simply
bump into it and stop moving. Note that this can sometimes be
used to your advantage!

FAST MODE

Raking a rock garden should be enjoyed at a leisurely pace, but
if you get impatient with the monk plodding around slowly, you
can press 'F' to turn fast mode on. This will cause the monk to
move around twice as quickly.

----------------------------------------------------------------
4. GARDEN DESIGNER
----------------------------------------------------------------

The garden designer allows you to create your own gardens, and
to play extra gardens that other people people have made.

CREATING A GARDEN

Use the buttons on the right to select a piece, and then click
on the garden to put it down. You can hold you finger down on
the mouse button as you move the mouse around to draw onto the
garden with the piece you have selected. Click on the 'Play'
button at any stage to try out your creation, and then press
the Esc key to return to the designer.

SAVING AND OPENING

Click on the 'Save' button and type in a file name to store your
garden as a file. You can view it later by clicking on 'Load'
and selecting the file.

EXTRA SETTINGS

You can choose to enter a title, author and season for your
garden. They are shown at the bottom of the screen and can be
changed by clicking on them. It is also possible to select a
suggested difficulty level so that other people viewing your
garden can get an idea of how hard it will be to solve. One star
means that the puzzle is easy and five stars means that it is
difficult.

VIEWING SOLUTIONS

Gardens that have a saved solution show up in the file list with
a little pink rectangle next to them. To view the solution, load
the garden and then hold down the shift key when you click play.

USING THE LEXALOFFLE BBS

The Lexaloffle BBS (http://www.lexaloffle.com/bbs) is a place
where you can get puzzles that other people have made, or to
post ones that you have created.

To make it easy to play gardens that have been posted on the BBS
or to post your own, it is possible to load and save gardens to
the clipboard.

To play a garden from the BBS, first select the contents of the
garden (everything in the white box), and then copy it to the
clipboard by selecting Edit->Copy. Now you can open the garden
from Zen Puzzle Garden by clicking on 'Open' and then 'Open
From Clipboard'.

If you would like to post your garden to the BBS, click on
'Save', and then 'Save To Clipboard'. You can now paste your
garden into the message with Edit->Paste. Don't forget to choose
a title and author for your garden! It is also helpful to
validate your garden before posting (see below).

If you would like to post your solutions or progress, press 'c'
during the game to capture an ascii screenshot, which is copied
to the clipboard as text. You can then paste the screenshot
into your message in the same way.

VALIDATING YOUR GARDEN

If you would like to show other players that your garden is
solvable without actually giving them a solution, you can
validate your garden. To do this, solve the garden and you will
see a 'Validated' note appear at the bottom right. Now save the
garden, and a special code will be generated to prove that it
is solvable. When someone else opens the garden, they will now
be able to see the 'Validated' sign and know that the garden
is solvable.
