Text Paragraph 1 := Since you don't currently have any ships around your homeworld, you need to build some. All ships are built from designs that you create. So the first thing to do is to create a ship design, and to do that, we need to go into the Designs Window. You should press Close on this window, then on the Command buttons on the Main Window, select the second button from the left in the first row which looks like a green grid with a ship on it (it will say Designs when you put your pointer over it). Text Number of Paragraphs := 3
Text Paragraph 1 := You are now in the Ship Design Window. Here you will create a ship design from which you will be able to produce ships. Consider the ship design like a template for creating the real thing. The first thing to do is to pick a size for your design. Underneath the word which says "Size", press the down pointing arrow button next to the box. A list will be displayed which will allow you to select from the available ship sizes. You should select the size called "Escort" by left-clicking on it.
Text Paragraph 2 := Next you'll want to select the Design Type by again pressing the arrow pointing down. You should select the first item called "Attack Ship" by left-clicking on it.
Text Paragraph 3 := Finally, you can pick a name for your design. You can either type in the box yourself, or press the arrow button to get a list of possible choices. Let's type in the name "Explorer" (you'll first need to backspace and delete the name "Design Name").

Text Title                  := Adding components
Text Number of Paragraphs := 5
Text Paragraph 1 := Now we need to add components to our design. Components are the different sections of the ship which give it capabilities. The first thing we need is a Bridge for our ship. In the middle of the window is a section called "Components Available (All)" with 3 rows and 3 columns of components. Find the component called "Bridge" and left-click on it.
Text Paragraph 2 := You should notice that the Warnings List in the bottom left of the window has now removed the warning for "Must have 1 bridge". Your design is not legal until you meet all of these requirements.
Text Paragraph 3 := You should also notice that the component had a space requirement of 10kT, and that when you added it to your design, that space was taken up ("Space Used") in the statistics for your design at the top right of the window. And finally, the component you just selected shows up in the list called "Components on Design" in the middle of the window.
Text Paragraph 4 := Now repeat this process of left-clicking on components for the following items: Life Support, Crew Quarters, 5 x Ion Engine I (add this item 5 times), (click on the right pointing arrow at the edge of the list) 2 x Depleted Uranium Cannon I. You've now completed your first ship.
Text Paragraph 5 := You should notice that there are no more warnings in the Warnings List. This means that your design is acceptable. Press the "Create Design" button to create your design and close this window.

Text Paragraph 2 := On the Main Window, find the command button for "Construction Queues" (looks like a wrench). When you select it you will display the Construction Queues window. On this window you can control all of the construction queues you own throughout your empire. There will be only one item in the list which is your home planet. Left-click on your home planet. Now the Set Construction Queue window will be displayed for you to set the planet's construction queue.
Text Paragraph 3 := In the Construction Items list you will see your Explorer design listed. Left-click on it to add it to this planet's construction queue. The name Explorer will now be displayed in the construction queue list for this planet. You can pass your pointer over the item to see a small report about it displayed at the bottom of the window. This will tell you that your Explorer ship will take 0.2 years until it is complete. Press the Close button on this window. Press the Close button on the Construction Queues window. First off, we would like to research Ship Construction so that we can get larger ship sizes to build. In the list of Research Areas, find the item called "Ship Construction" and left-click on it.
Text Paragraph 2 := You will notice that it gets added to the first of the four boxes at the bottom of the window called "1 Current Project". This shows that you are currently research "Ship Construction", you are attempting to attain tech level 2, the estimate time of completion is 0.1 years (1 turn), and that you are spending 20650 research points on that single project. When you start the game, you are given a bonus in points to help start you off. We won't have nearly this many research points on our next turn to spend. Press the Close button on this window.

The first item tells you that a "New Tech Level" has been attained. This is the Ship Construction technology area that you selected on the last turn. The next item in the list says "Frigate Discovered". Because you just attained the new tech level in Ship Construction, there is a new ship size available for you to build ships with. The last item is called "All Projects Completed" which is telling you that you have completed all of your research projects and are not currently researching anything. We'll change that shortly. Text Paragraph 2 := In the "Items" list, click the item called "Frigate". In the "Item Details" section of the window, you should see a complete report displayed about this ship size. It will look very similar to the report you were given in the Log Window when you selected the "Frigate Discovered" item. This new ship size is larger than the Escort size, costs a little more, but only gets a 30% modifier because of its small size. You should take some time to browse through all of the different items in this window from Components through Formations. When you are done, press the Close button on this window.

The only thing you are spending your resources on is Construction Queue Usage for a total of 250 minerals. This Construction Queue Usage amount comes from the Explorer ship that you selected to build last turn.
Text Paragraph 3 := The Net Resources per Turn show that your empire is generating more resources that you are spending, which is a very good thing. Text Paragraph 1 := You will see a Spaceport, Space Yard Facility I, Resupply Depot, Mineral Miner Facility I, Radioactives Extraction Facility I, Organics Farm Facility I, and a Research Center I. Each of your solar systems requires a Spaceport in it to gather the resources from your planets and transport it to your empire. Without a Spaceport, you will not get points from any of the planets in the system. A Space Yard Facility is used to construct ships in space. Without it, you can only construct items on the planet such as Facilities and Units.
Text Paragraph 2 := The Resupply Depot Facility allow you to supply your ships so that they can move out into space. Without supplies, your ships will not be able to move or operate. The Mineral Miner, Radioactives Extraction, and Organics Farm generate resources from your planet. When you look at their reports, you will notice that they each generate 800 resources per turn. This amount is modified by the planet's value, your population's happiness, and other factors. The final facility on your planet is the Research Center. It generates the research points that you spent in the Research Window.
Text Paragraph 3 := You should also notice on the bottom of this window that there is a limited amount of space on the planet for facilities. You have constructed 7 of the possible 15 facilities that the planet can support.

Items such as the planet type, size, atmosphere, conditions, and value are shown at the top of the window. The value of the planet is a modifier to the points your facilities produce. So since your Mineral facility produces 800 minerals on its own, this amount will be modified by 100% (no change) because of the value of the planet.
Text Paragraph 2 := In the top left of the window above the planet picture is a small flag. This is the flag that represents your empire. You can right-click on it to get a report about your race (you can also do this to other player's flags). Underneath your planet two small pictures are displayed. These are called status icons and they mean that you have a spaceyard present on this planet and are currently constructing something on the planet. There are many types of status icons that can be displayed on different reports.
Text Paragraph 3 := Below the description of the planet is listed the colony type, population amount, reproduction rate of the population, and their happiness. After the population amount is a small picture of the race that is present on this planet. Currently, only your race is on the planet. You can right-click on this small picture to see more details.
Text Paragraph 4 := Below the population details, is a listing of the current amounts of resources being generated by this planet. The section displays the Minerals, Organics, Radioactives, Research Points, and Intelligence Points that are being generated each turn (after all the various modifiers are applied). Finally the window displays the current item that is being constructed by your planet. You should notice that it says "Explorer" and has a time remaining of 0.1 years.

A ship which passes into a warp points arrives instantaneously on the other side. We want our ship to move through the warp point so that it can get to another solar system. With the Ship report displayed, look up at the Order buttons on the Main Window. You may notice that some of them have lit up. The buttons which are lit up are the orders which you can give to your ship. Move your pointer over some of them to see their name displayed below.

You must now click on a warp point for your ship to move to and then warp through. Left-click on the Warp Point on the right side of the solar system (it looks like a swirling blue hole).
Text Paragraph 3 := When you click on it, you will notice your ship immediately move towards the warp point. It will get to the same location as the warp point, and then will stop. Your ship only had 5 movement points which was just enough to get you there. Your ship has not moved through the warp point yet. Also you should keep in mind that you gave your ship orders to move through the warp point. This means that it still has the orders because it has not completed them yet. On your next turn, when your ship has movement points again, it will continue to execute its orders and will move through the warp point.

Text Paragraph 2 := Another factor in colonization is the atmosphere that your race can breathe. Your race can breathe Oxygen atmospheres. This new Colony Ship that you have built can colonize Rock planets. There are several in your home system, but unfortunately, none of them has the atmosphere type that you can breathe. No matter. You can still colonize the planet, but your colony will have to be domed.
Text Paragraph 3 := As you look at the planets in the system window, you may have noticed little red stars (or asterisks) at the top right corner of three of the planets in your home system. This little star is a helper for you to identify which planets you can colonize. A little red star means that you can colonize it, but you cannot breathe the atmosphere. A little green star means that you can both colonize it, and breathe the atmosphere. Obviously, the best planets to colonize are those with the green stars. Planets without stars you cannot colonize with your current technology.

Text Paragraph 1 := There are three planets in this system that you can colonize. We are going to colonize the planet that is orange in color named Dornot II (not the planet right next to your home planet, but the next one up). Why this planet? There are three main factors when colonizing a planet. First off, can you colonize it and breathe the atmosphere. Secondly, the larger the planet the more facilities and cargo it can hold. Third is the inherent value of the planet.
Text Paragraph 2 := With your Colony Ship 0001 selected, click on the order button named "Colonize" in the order bank of the Main Window (it looks like a small white dome on green grass). When you do, text will appear which says "Please select target for Colonize order...". Left-click on the large orange planet with the red star (Dornot II). When you do, your colony ship will move to the planet, and then a window will be displayed asking you for the Colony Type. Left-click on the entry for "Mining Colony". This selection of Colony Type is merely for notational purposes so that you can remember the purpose you have for the planet.

Text Number of Paragraphs := 1
Text Paragraph 1 := Dornot II will now be colonized and show its complete report on the Main Window. It will look similar to the report for your home planet but with a few notable differences. The population is only 4M out of a maximum of 300M (million). There is a small icon which looks like a white wire-frame dome. This means that this colony is domed. A Domed colony is restricted to a reduced maximum population it can hold. You should also notice that it is not producing any resources. First thing we want to do is to build facilities on this planet so that it will provide resources for our empire.

Text Title                  := Facility Construction
Text Number of Paragraphs := 3
Text Paragraph 1 := Since the planet is in the same system as our home planet, and our home planet already has a Spaceport, we don't need a spaceport on this planet. With the Dornot II report showing, find the button "Build Queue" in the order bank of the Main Window and left-click on it.
Text Paragraph 2 := The now familiar Set Construction Queue Window will be displayed. You should notice on this window that the "Ships" tab button is darkened on the right-side. You cannot build ships at this planet until you construct a Space Yard facility here. But that's not our priority right now. We want to build Mineral miner facilities.
Text Paragraph 3 := The "Facilities" tab on the right should already be selected. In the list of Construction Items, you will see a list of all of the different types of facilities you can create. Find the item called "Mineral Miner Facility I" and left-click on it 3 times. You will see the item added to the Construction Queue three times. The Mineral Miner Facility at the top of the list will be the first to be worked on, but when it is done, the next one will be worked on automatically. In this way, you can give your planets build orders which will cover several turns. Press the Close button on this window.
