Introduction

Deep in the remotest countryside of rural Transylvania, hidden amongst snow capped mountains and sinister swamps lie four villages in a region known as Monsterville.  Here, four Monsters use all their dastardly skills to gain power.  Calling their Minions to aid in their struggle, they will stop at nothing to become Mayor.

Vampire bats, brain munching aliens, the living dead and things that go bump in the night – you will encounter all of these and much, much more in Monsterville.

On the Mission Select screen you will see a picture of the Village and a description of your Mission Objective.  At the bottom of the Mission Objective there is a difficulty rating for the Mission.  Below the picture of the Village are a number of rosettes, which represent the opponents you will face in this Village.

Once you have successfully completed a mission, a mayoral chain will appear on this screen.

Game Overview

Main Aim

Choose your Monster and compete to become Mayor of a remote Transylvanian village.  Convert the Peasants to your cause and they will work tirelessly for you, call on Minions to aid your campaign and use any tactics, however foul, to achieve your goal.

Special Abilities

Each Monster has their own unique special abilities.  These can help you move around the village and convert the Peasants’ homes to your cause much faster.

Use your right mouse button to get the Monster to use these powers.

Resource

Peasants can generate resource for you if you control the right buildings.  You can also feed on them directly (but they’re not so keen on that!).

You can use your Resource to construct new buildings or protection items and it will also allow you to use your Special Abilities.

Phobias

Everyone is afraid of something, even Monsters!  If Monsters are near something of which they are afraid, they will work very, very slowly.

Cameo Appearances

The Mummy

An ancient Egyptian tomb in the cemetery of Hangman’s Creek holds the Mummy.  Convert this building and you will enjoy the support of the Mummy and be able to unleash a deadly plague on your opponents.

The Creature From The Black Lagoon

The boathouse in the Black Lagoon is home to this fearsome monster.  However, if you convert the boathouse you will enjoy the support of the Creature from the Black Lagoon and be able to use his secret underwater passage.

The Bride of Frankenstein

The Bride of Frankenstein wanders lost and lonely through Creepy Hollow.  Any of the Monsters encountering her will be stunned by her beauty and unable to move for a short while.

The Moleman

The secretive Moleman lives in the mines under the Devil’s Tower.  Convert the mines and not only will the Moleman support your cause, but he will let your creatures use the mines as a shortcut under the mountain.

Minions

Your Monster doesn’t have to do all the hard work alone.  By building Minion houses you can attract underlings to do your bidding.

Be warned though, these Minions require payment and they are not cheap.  If your Resource dries up, they will return home until you are able to pay them again.

Count Dracula can construct crypts for fellow Vampires.
. Frankenstein's Monster can build graves for Zombies.
The Metaluna Mutant can build alien dwellings to attract other extra-terrestrials.
The Hunchback of Notre Dame can attract Esmerelda and other gypsies to help him by building caravans.

These Minions can be controlled in the same way as your main Monster.  There are also a number of buttons on the Monster Panel (see below) that you can use as shortcuts.

Peasants

Peasants make up most of the Village life. The serve two vital functions for the player:

To get a peasant to vote for you, you must convert their home; they will then give you their unquestioning support (until someone else convinces them otherwise).

Once peasants have been converted to your cause they will rush to your Special Buildings (see below) and start to produce Resource for your Monster.

You can set the priority of each of your Special Buildings, so that Peasants know which one's you'd like them to go to.

There is another way to get Resource from a Peasant, but they’re not so keen on that.  Just select your Monster and click on a Peasant and you’ll see why!

The Villages

Somewhere in the distant reaches of Transylvania lie four villages untouched by the march of technology and unaware that the 21st century is already upon us.

Each village has its own unique character, from snowy mountains to black lagoons they will each present the player with a different challenge

When you enter a village you will notice there are already many buildings to be seen and the Peasants are going about their daily routines.

Located somewhere in each Village is a Village centre.  This is marked with a large statue of a Griffin and it is here the Peasants will come to cast their votes at election time.  This building always remains neutral and cannot be converted to a Monster’s cause.

The buildings in the village all have flower borders around them.  When a Monster converts a building, the flowers will be changed to the colour of that Monster’s rosette.

Village Buildings

There are many different buildings in each of the villages.  The most common of these are the Peasant homes, which come in two different sizes.

Some Peasant homes may also have cows in the yard, which can come in very useful.

Civic Buildings

You will also find a number of civic buildings in each village.  This is where the Peasants will come to work and where they will generate Resource for your Monster.

All of these buildings carry a number of votes, so they are well worth converting.  However, only some of them will be able to generate Resource for your Monster, whilst others may even frighten them away!

These buildings also have a special power, which is charged up as your Peasants work in them.  These powers can have dramatic effects on the game, giving you a huge boost or crippling your opponents.

Hospital

The hospital is an excellent source of blood for Dracula and it can also supply the Metaluna Mutant with the brains he craves.  However, Frankenstein has had far too many operations and he is now scared of hospitals.

The player in control of the Hospital will be able to cure the plague.

Town Clock

The clock tower is often struck by lightning so it is very useful to Frankenstein.  The Hunchback of Notre Dame also likes its chimes.  However, all that ticking puts the Metaluna Mutant into a state of confusion.

Control the clock and you will be able to advance time.

The Old Tavern

This is an old inn, where the Peasants can partake of the local brew.  Although the Peasants cannot generate Resource for any of the Monsters here, the Tavern does have the power to call Happy Hour throughout the village.  This will cause the villagers to become forgetful and confused and they cannot remember who they should be voting for.

Dairy Farm

The Metaluna Mutant has a particular taste for cow brains so he loves this building.  Dracula can also use it to gain blood.  The Hunchback of Notre Dame finds the discordant noise of the cow bells annoying though.

The farm also gives the player the power to give cows the vote!

Village Church

The Hunchback of Notre Dame loves the church bells and the spire is occasionally struck by lightning, so it can be useful for Frankenstein.  Dracula’s dislike of crosses is well known though and he doesn’t like the church one bit.

The church has the power to ban alcohol in the village, preventing the Tavern’s special power being used.

Special Civic Buildings

Each Monster also has a special Civic Building that only they can construct.  Peasants working in these buildings will generate Resource far quicker than in any other building in the village.

Barbershop

The traditional sign for a Barber’s shop is the red and white pole, symbolising the blood and bandages that characterised much of their work in times gone by.

This is exactly the kind of shop Dracula loves.  One or two over enthusiastic Barbers can keep the blood flowing all day long.

Van de Graaff Generator

This giant generator is powered by Peasants working on treadmills and produces huge sparks of electricity at the top.  It can provide enough electricity for Frankenstein to take over the village.

Library

The Metaluna Mutant loves to munch on brains, the bigger the better.  So, what better way to improve your diet than by encouraging the Peasants to go to the library and expand their minds?

Forge

The sound of hammer on anvil can create very pleasing noises when in the hands of a professional.  The Hunchback of Notre Dame loves to hear the Blacksmiths at work.

Protection

Once your Monster has worked hard to convert a building to your cause, you may take a dim view of anyone else coming in and trying to turn it against you.  To help keep your opponents at bay, there are a number of protection items you can build.  These items can only be constructed within your Sphere of Influence (see below) and they cannot be built right next to another each other.

Each of the items protects against a specific opponent.  You must take care when placing these items though as although they will scare one Monster away, they will attract another!

Cross

Dracula’s dislike of crosses is well known.  However, the crosses are often struck by lightning, so Frankenstein likes them.

Flaming Torch

Frankenstein is afraid of fire, but the Metaluna Mutant is drawn to it as his home planet is much warmer than Earth and he finds it cold here.

Mirror

The Hunchback of Notre Dame cannot bear to see his own reflection.  Dracula likes mirrors though as he cannot be seen in them.

Grandfather Clock

The clock chimes are very harmonious, so the Hunchback of Notre Dame loves to hear them play.  However, the rhythmic ticking of the clock sends the Metaluna Mutant into a semi-trance state!

Construction

To construct a new building or protection item, you simply have to click on the icon of that item in the construction panel and then click somewhere in the village to place it.  The cost of the building will be subtracted from your Resource level.

Plots

The village authorities are very strict so you can’t simply build anywhere you choose.

Around each of the villages you will find vacant plots of different sizes.  These are the only places you can place new buildings – the bigger the plot, the bigger the building you can place there.

Rules for protection items are more relaxed.  You can place these on any piece of firm, flat ground but they may not be placed directly next to each other.

Sphere of Influence

If you select a building, you will see a glowing circle surrounding it – this is its Sphere of Influence.  This will change colour to show which Monster is in control of the building.

You may only place new items or buildings within your own Sphere of Influence.

Beware – Protection items and Minion homes must always be within the Sphere of one of your houses or Civic Buildings.  If not, they will disappear.

User Interface

The User Interface is split into different sections, each displaying different types of information.  If you position your mouse pointer over a button on the UI, a tool tip will appear letting you know what the button does.

Control Panel

The control panel has all the vital information you will need as you play the game.  It also has controls for the camera and the rest of the UI.

Building Stats Panel (Civic Building)

This panel replaces the construction panel when you have a building selected.  It contains useful information on the building.  When you have a civic building selected, you will see the following display:

R.  Building allegiance

Each of the rosette represents one of the Monsters competing for control of the village.  The longer the ribbon, the more of the building a Monster controls.  The white rosette represents the neutral part of the building.

To control a building the Monster must convert more than half of the building.

S.  Number of Peasants

This shows the number of Peasants in a building (on the left) and the maximum number of Peasants allowed in the building (the number on the right)

T.  Special Power bar

This control is only displayed for your buildings.

U.  Building priority setting

If you control more than one Civic Building, you may wish to tell your Peasants which one to work in.  Clicking on the right arrow here will let you Peasants know a building is of higher importance – clicking on the left arrow will tell them it is less important.

This control is only displayed for your buildings.

Building Stats Panel (Dwelling)

This panel replaces the construction panel when you have a building selected.  It contains useful information on the building.  When you have a civic building selected, you will see the following display:

V.  Building allegiance

Each of the rosette represents one of the Monsters competing for control of the village.  The longer the ribbon, the more of the building a Monster controls.  The white rosette represents the neutral part of the building.

To control a building the Monster must convert more than half of the building.

W.  Number of Peasants

This shows the number of Peasants currently in the building (on the left) and the total number of Peasants who live in the building (the number on the right).

X.  Number of Cows

This shows the number of cows owned by the Peasants in this house.  Most of the time, cows will chew the cud and take a back seat in Village politics, but if they are given the vote, then they can become the decisive factor in the elections.
