Infantry Units
Musicians
There were a certain number of musicians in both infantry and cavalry
troops in Europe (usually 2 or 3 per company). These were mainly drummers
and flutists in the infantry, and trumpeters in the cavalry. Their main
task was to give signals on the battlefield. Also, musicians raised the soldiers'
morale and sense of unity. It is hard to imagine ranks of infantry marching without drum accompaniment. A musician's outfit was
in the first place characterised by bright colors - stripes on
the sleeves, wings, etc. A musician was equipped with a sword and sometimes with a pistol,
but had no armour.
