England
The greatest of all countries of protestant religion. Due to its lack of military organization it could not take
an active part either in the struggle of the Netherlands for independence nor in the Thirty Years' War. The same
disorganization showed in the civil war. The army of Charles I, as well as
the troops of
Parliament, while they numbered 60-70 thousand soldiers, still presented a very irregular army. They weren't capable of achieving any significant
victory. This situation remained unchanged until 1645, when Cromwell began
to form a regular, skilled parliamentary army, which, when finished,
presented a military corporation of the strictest discipline. This discipline was based on religion.
The cavalry comprised about one third of the entire army. Soldiers
received huge salaries and could afford the lives of gentlemen. Also, England had a very mighty, well-equipped and
numerous fleet which long
prevailed on the sea, after their famous victory over the Spanish armada. Due to its beneficial (insular) geographical position and strong fleet, no enemy
intruders were able to reach this territory. An active colonial policy also gained England enormous territories
in the "New World".
