Bavaria

The first knowledge of the Bavarian duchy dates back to the 6th century. At this time, the Bavarian state was formed of the Agilofinger family. On the banks of the river Izar (in the area of what is now Munich) emerged the first Bavarian settlement. In 788, Charlemagne toppled Bavarian ruler Tassilos III and annexed the territory to his empire as a province. In 1214, Pfalz am Rhein was annexed to Bavaria. Similar to other duchies in the Holy Roman Empire, Bavaria was rather an independent state and had quite a substantial influence on European policy, taking an active part in the European wars of the 17th and 18th centuries. During the War of the Spanish Succession, Bavaria was on the side of France, opposing the English and Austrians. They also participated in the Thirty Years' War and the War of the Austrian Succession.
